British singer Dua Lipa filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Thursday (May 8), People reported. Lipa accused the company of using a copyrighted backstage image of her on the cardboard boxes of TVs sold across the United States.
The 30-year-old world-famous singer is seeking at least $15 million in damages in the court case, as well as profits from the sale of televisions featuring the photo.
According to the lawsuit, the company used Lipa’s face extensively in a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge or consent.

The complaint also says that when Lipa became aware of Samsung’s “infringement and violation of her right of publicity,” the singer’s representatives sent a demand to stop using the image around June of last year. However, despite the demands, the company continued to use the image.
The complaint says Samsung’s response to the demand to stop using the image was “dismissive and callous” and adds that the products “remain on the market to this day.” People reported that the Grammy Award-winning singer’s lawyers claim that Samsung intentionally exploited Lipa’s celebrity status and brand recognition to market its televisions.
