Mexican influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot and killed on Tuesday while livestreaming with friends, Reuters reported. Local authorities said the shooting occurred outside a fast food restaurant in the northwestern Mexican city of Culiacan.
Gastelum, who had nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok, more than 16,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, and was known for his comedy videos, was live-streaming outside a fast-food restaurant.
According to Reuters, there were two helmeted motorcyclists; the driver of the motorcycle fired a gun directly at Gastelum. A security official in the state of Sinaloa confirmed the social media influencer’s death. The official said a major security operation was underway.
A similar incident occurred in May last year with 23-year-old Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Marquez, who was shot and killed during a TikTok livestream at her salon in Zapopan, in the western state of Jalisco. According to Reuters, she was killed when a man entered the salon and opened fire. Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala was later arrested in connection with the incident.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “Life can change in just a few seconds, and stories like this are a painful reminder of that reality. No one should lose their life while simply doing their job or livestreaming. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this unimaginable time. Hoping justice is served and that innocent people can live without fear of this kind of violence. Rest in peace.”
