An Indian-American engineer, Manoj Tumu, 23, left multinational technology company Amazon and has now joined Zuckerberg’s advertising research team at Meta with an attractive salary of $400,000. The young techie reveals how he got the job.

Manoj Tumu left Amazon in June to join the advertising research team at Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta with a salary of $400,000 (3.36 crore INR), he said in an article for Business Insider.

“In June, I left Amazon to join Meta as a machine learning software engineer for a total compensation of over $400,000. I was really excited about it and knew I wanted to take the job as soon as I got the offer,” Manoj said in the article.

Explaining his reason for leaving his job at the big tech company Amazon, the 23-year-old said, “Although I had learned a lot at Amazon, I just thought there was more interesting work going on at Meta.”

How Manoj Tumu secured his job at Meta

In his article, Manoj mentions that the fields of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Machine Learning (ML) have undergone massive changes in the last few years.

“It used to be a lot more acceptable to just use classical techniques, which rely on humans to make decisions about data representations. Now the focus is on deep learning, which taps into artificial neural networks to automatically learn features from raw data,” he wrote.

While giving advice to artificial intelligence job seekers, Manoj says in his article that there can be many variations on the job title; it could be research scientist, applied scientist, software engineer, or ML engineer, depending on the company.

Manoj advises those trying to enter the AI and machine learning fields to try to get a tech internship during college, which pays less but can be beneficial for a machine learning career later on, and it is better not to worry about the salary.

The young techie suggested that experience is the biggest factor in getting a job at top tech companies. Manoj, who started his master’s degree career in 2022, said that his decent resume helped him secure his jobs at Meta and Amazon, as he had no references for any of the companies.

“When I see the résumés that people post online, asking for advice, I see projects or programming languages taking up space,” Manoj wrote.

Young talent Manoj suggested adding experience instead of projects on a resume, saying, “My general advice would be that once you have two or three years of experience, it’s OK to remove the projects and focus more on highlighting your experience.”

Manoj makes an important point: He says that common mistakes job seekers make during interviews are during the behavioral round. He draws on his previous experience, saying that he went through six rounds of interviews at Amazon, adding, “where they asked coding, machine learning, and behavioral questions.”

In this context, he studied the company’s values in preparation for the behavioral interview and had a huge document with him.
