Iran and New Zealand drew 2-2 in the first group match of the 2026 World Cup at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Monday night. The two teams shared one point each in Group G after the match.

Forward Elijah Just scored twice against Iran. The 26-year-old became the first New Zealand player to score two goals at a FIFA World Cup.

Defender Ramin Rezaeian scored the first goal for Iran, and midfielder Mohammad Mohebi saved the team from defeat by scoring the second goal.

Team Melli has begun their journey at the politically charged World Cup. Hundreds of Iranian-Americans protested against the government outside the stadium. Many expatriate fans in the stadium turned their backs on the field during the national anthem and hurled insults at them—but once the match started, most Iranian players were seen cheering, according to the AP.

The Kiwis achieved an impressive result against Iran, who are 65 places higher in the FIFA rankings. Captain Chris Wood assisted both goals scored by Elijah Just.

Shahriyar Moghanlou and Ramin Rezaeian each provided one assist for Iran. Rezaeian scored a goal in addition to providing an assist.
