Inter Miami CF has appointed Argentine Cristian Alberto ‘Kily’ Gonzalez as its new head coach, the club announced on Thursday. He will take charge once he receives the corresponding work permits.
According to Reuters, Guillermo Hoyos is expected to take over Miami on an interim basis until Gonzalez gets the work permit. However, Major League Soccer (MLS) has suspended the 63-year-old Hoyos for one game and fined him an unspecified amount for repeatedly violating the league’s late kickoff policy.
Miami will face CF Montreal in the MLS on Saturday, where Hoyos will serve his suspension. He replaces coach Javier Mascherano, who resigned on April 14. He previously served as the club’s sporting director.
Mascherano took over the team in November 2024, and the club won its first MLS Cup under him in 2025. He stepped down as head coach for personal reasons.
Gonzalez has a close relationship with club captain Lionel Messi, as both are from Rosario. The 52-year-old also previously served as head coach of Argentine professional men’s soccer clubs Rosario Central, Unión de Santa Fe, and Platense.
The appointment of the new coach comes at a time when Miami has been struggling in recent weeks, losing four of its last five games. However, the club remains second in the Eastern Conference standings with 39 points.
