Microsoft’s contentious Windows Recall feature has now been formally introduced, along with the integration of its Copilot Plus AI with PCs. This AI-powered tool, which Microsoft has started rolling out, takes really cool screen snapshots every few seconds. Users of compatible to view Microsoft All AI PCs and laptops can now access the Copilot+ Recall AI feature in preview mode.

The Recall tool was initially introduced with great fanfare, but it was momentarily delayed because of general worries about user security and privacy. Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into fixing those problems with the most recent update, presenting Recall as a productivity tool that will change the game.

What is Windows Recall?

(Preview launched on April 9, 2025) For individuals who are unfamiliar with Windows Recall. Let’s assume it’s an AI feature that uses screenshots to build a searchable timeline by taking regular screen captures. Users can “remember” previous actions, like a webpage they visited, a document they viewed, or a video conference they attended, by using these snapshots, which are used by the AI. Consider it your computer’s photographic memory.

The feature uses on-device AI to process data locally rather than in the cloud, and it is deeply integrated with Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PCs. This modification is a component of Microsoft’s response to criticism regarding data privacy.

Following its initial announcement in May 2024, cybersecurity experts and privacy advocates closely monitored Windows Recall. Microsoft has marketed the AI-powered Recall as your computer’s photographic memory. You can quickly locate things you’ve seen and done by using this feature, which functions as an advanced search tool by taking a series of screenshots of your Windows activity. That seems like a really good way to find files, settings, apps, and other content. Critics, however, called it a “privacy nightmare,” pointing to worries about ongoing monitoring and possible abuse of personal information.

It’s possible that Microsoft made an effort to reassure prospective customers by stating that your screenshots are not used for training or shared with the business or outside parties. Only users with Windows Hello authentication can access the encrypted snapshot data. Microsoft obviously believes that the recall is at least prepared for insider testing given all of the changes and justifications.

What’s Next?

In the upcoming months, Microsoft intends to extend Windows Recall to additional devices and geographical areas. Possibly in late Q2 or early Q3 2025, the feature is anticipated to be formally released with the upcoming major Windows 11 update.

Not with standing persistent worries about surveillance and digital boundaries, the relaunch represents Microsoft’s larger effort to integrate AI into the Windows ecosystem.
