Putin Eager for Talks with Trump, Kremlin Awaits Confirmation from Washington

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his readiness to hold talks with US President Donald Trump, with the Kremlin awaiting confirmation from Washington. “We are waiting for a signal from Washington,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Speaking to the World Economic Forum in Davos via video link on Thursday, Trump said he wanted to work towards reducing nuclear weapons, adding that he thought Russia and China could support reducing their own weapons capabilities.

Putin has made it apparent that he wants to resume nuclear disarmament talks as soon as possible, according to Peskov. However, he said that these talks should be more comprehensive than they have been in the past while taking into account the nuclear arsenals of other countries, such as Britain and France.

The possible conversation is anticipated to center on topics pertaining to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the reduction of nuclear weapons. Sanctions and high interest rates have made Russia’s domestic economic problems worse. In the absence of negotiations, President Trump recently threatened to impose additional economic sanctions on Russia.

President Trump is “wise and practical,” agreeing with President Putin, who as of late communicated questions about the burden of new U.S. sanctions, claiming that doing so would have an inconvenient impact on the American economy. He also said that Trump seems to have avoided the war in Ukraine if he had won the 2020 race, criticizing a declaration issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that disallowed any talks with the Kremlin.

We must have a conversation because there is something to discuss. Time has frequently been wasted. Since we’ve already discussed this interest, the United States has the upper hand because it has halted all significant communication with our nation,” Peskov said.

The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, or New START, which sets limits on the number of strategic nuclear warheads the United States and Russia can deploy and the land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them, is scheduled to expire on February 5, 2026.

Mr. Peskov’s remarks mirrored those of Putin, who said that he had to deploy troops to Ukraine in order to defend Russian speakers residing there and to fight dangers to Russian security posed by Ukraine’s intentions to join NATO. Moscow’s action has been denounced as an unwanted act of aggression by Ukraine and the West.

Mr. Trump vowed to impose severe taxes and sanctions on Russia on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, unless an agreement was found to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
