Japan tops the list of the 10 most polite countries in the world, followed by Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, the Philippines, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and South Africa.

Factors that make a country ‘polite’ include travel experiences, business relations with other countries, people’s behavior, hospitality, and everyday conversations.

In a new survey of more than 4,600 respondents conducted by financial services company Remitly, Japan alone received more than 35 percent of the total votes, far ahead of other countries.

Japan is globally known for its politeness

Japan leads the way with 35.2% of the total vote, a country renowned for its high emphasis on cultural respect, etiquette, and social harmony. The Japanese are also known for their cleanliness and punctuality, which undoubtedly contribute to Japan’s reputation for politeness.

Canada is ahead of the US in politeness

Canada, a vast North American country, came in second with 13.4% of the vote. The country is also known for its hospitality and courtesy. On the other hand, Canadians have long been known as some of the friendliest people in the world.

According to Remitly, the United States received just over one-tenth (1.6%) of Canada’s total votes in terms of politeness.

After Canada, the UK is in third place with 6.2%, highlighting Europe’s strong presence, followed by China with 3.1%.
