Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has acquired Barcelona-based fifth division club UE Cornellà in Spain. The club announced the deal on Thursday (April 16) without disclosing details of the purchase.

Messi has a long-standing relationship with FC Barcelona, having been the best player of his generation during his two decades at the club. He won multiple titles and six Ballon d’Or awards before leaving the club in 2021.

The club said in a statement that Messi’s arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s history. The club added that “the project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots.”

The club was founded in 1951 and has helped produce players such as Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, one of Barça’s greatest players of recent times Gerard Martín, and former Barcelona defender Jordi Alba, who also played with Messi at Inter Miami.

However, in 2025 Messi launched the Uruguayan fourth division team Deportivo LSM in partnership with close teammate Luis Suárez, a deal that marked his first solo venture into club ownership.

Messi, 38, is aiming to compete in the World Cup to be held jointly in the United States, Mexico, and Canada this summer, where Argentina will defend their title.
