Nearly 25,000 people have expressed interest in joining the federal recruitment initiative, Tech Force, a senior Trump administration official said on Tuesday, December 23, as the US government looks to hire artificial intelligence (AI) experts, Reuters reported.
According to Scott Kupor, director of the US Office of Personnel Management, the Trump administration will use this list to hire software and data engineers, among other technical roles.
The Trump administration’s initiative will see interested candidates compete for 1,000 positions in the first Tech Force cohort, Reuters reported. And selected candidates will work for two years on technology projects within federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Veterans Affairs (VA), Justice, and other government offices, Kupor said previously.
President Donald Trump, in the first months of his second term, reduced the number of government employees, except for essential positions, through executive orders to maintain “national security.” But despite the massive layoffs of federal workers, Tech Force is a new hiring initiative that aims to further improve the quality of work by hiring tech talent into government departments.
