Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek R1 has revealed a sophisticated AI model that will rival top Western competitors in a major development that has rocked the global tech industry. Current President Donald Trump has referred to the discovery as a “wake-up call” for American tech companies, urging them to increase their efforts in the race for artificial intelligence.
January 27 (2025), U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that Chinese startup DeepSeek technology should serve as a catalyst for American businesses and that it is commendable that Chinese companies have developed a quicker and less expensive artificial intelligence method.
The US will continue to dominate the field, he added, adding that he was not worried about the breakthrough. However, in certain nations, DeepSeek has sparked worries about cybersecurity, and Australian Science Minister Ed Husic has advised prudence. Trump claimed that Chinese leaders had informed him that the US had the world’s best scientists, and he hinted that American businesses would adopt Chinese industry’s cheaper AI technology.
“The ideas come to us every time. We always come first. That, in my opinion, is a positive that has the potential to be a very good development. Therefore, you will spend less money and, hopefully, come up with the same solution instead of spending billions and billions,” Trump stated.
Deepseek: What is it?
DeepSeek, which was founded in 2023 by technologist Liang Wenfeng, is making rapid progress in the field of artificial intelligence. Compared to US companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which usually invest millions or even billions of dollars, the company’s most recent model, DeepSec-R1, was constructed with an investment of about $6 million. DeepSec-R1 performs on par with elite models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, despite its low price.
You may check how Deepseek’s model performs in comparison to the Open AI o1 model in a benchmark or performance report that was released.
In math, physics coding, and logic, it is reportedly just as strong as OpenAI’s O1 model, the company’s most potent model to date, which was unveiled late last year. A logic model is R1. These models simulate a process akin to how people reason through issues or concepts by producing answers gradually. Compared to its rivals, it uses less memory, which eventually lowers the cost of completing tasks.

Censorship by the Chinese government poses a serious obstacle to its international AI ambitions. However, it seems that’s base model was trained using reliable sources and then added a layer of censorship or withholding of specific information through an extra layer of protection.
Worldwide Responses and Issues
The release of DeepSeek-R1 had an instantaneous and substantial impact. It overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded free app in the US Apple App Store in a matter of weeks. Major technology stocks fell as a result of the market being severely disrupted by this rapid adoption. Notably, Nvidia’s market capitalization dropped 17% in a single day, reportedly the largest drop the company has experienced to date.
Globally, the advent of DeepSeek has provoked a range of responses. The advancement is viewed as a possible danger to the US’s position as a leader in technology. In response to this challenge, President Trump has emphasized that American tech companies must bolster their AI initiatives.
As we know, US President Donald Trump has launched a $500 billion private sector investment fund for artificial intelligence infrastructure, with the goal of outpacing competing countries in business-critical technology. The initiative, which Trump has dubbed The Stargate, will be led by significant business leaders such as OpenAI, the originator of ChatGPT, SoftBank, and Oracle.
Finally, Trump encouraged US businesses by stating, “We always have ideas.” We are always first. So, in my opinion, that is a great development that has the potential to be really beneficial. So, instead of spending billions of dollars, you spend less and ideally arrive at the same outcome.”
