Mozilla is adding a free built-in Firefox VPN-style privacy feature to its browser, giving users a simpler way to hide their IP address and location while browsing. The company says the tool will begin rolling out with Firefox 149 on 2026 March 24, starting in the U.S., U.K., France and Germany with 50GB of monthly protected browsing data.
According to Mozilla, the feature routes browser traffic through a proxy inside Firefox rather than acting as a full device-wide VPN. That means it is designed mainly to protect browsing activity within the browser, not all internet traffic across a user’s device.
Mozilla says the Firefox VPN feature will launch first in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The free monthly 50GB allowance should be enough for regular browsing, but it is unlikely to replace a full standalone VPN for users who stream heavily, download large files or want system-wide protection.

Even so, the built-in approach could appeal to users who want extra privacy without installing another app or extension. Mozilla is also leaning on its privacy-focused reputation at a time when many free VPN services face scrutiny over how they handle user data.
The Firefox VPN launch is part of a wider product update that also includes features such as Split View and Tab Notes. Together, those additions show Mozilla is trying to make Firefox more useful for both privacy-conscious users and people who want stronger built-in productivity tools.
For Mozilla, the move is also strategic. Firefox remains a smaller browser player than Chrome, Safari and Edge, and privacy has become one of its clearest ways to stand apart from larger rivals.
Mozilla’s new Firefox VPN feature gives the browser a high-profile privacy upgrade and could make protected browsing more accessible to everyday users. With the rollout beginning on 2026 March 24 in four countries, the feature is likely to become one of Firefox’s most closely watched additions this year.
