On Friday (February 20), the tech giant announced that Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is retiring from his position after 38 years of service, and Asha Sharma has been nominated.
According to the company, Insider Sharma has been named the executive vice president and CEO of the gaming division. What was her previous role? She led product development for AI (artificial intelligence) models and services at Microsoft.
Her key goal is to recommit to core Xbox fans and gamers. As Reuters reported, the tech giant is struggling with tariff-induced cost pressures, intense competition, and uncertain consumer spending. The company’s struggles have led to higher prices for Xbox hardware.
“We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build the expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world,” Sharma said in his message.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that last year, Spencer decided to retire, and the company has been in discussions about a succession plan since then.
Sarah Bond, president and chief operating officer of Xbox, is leaving Microsoft, according to the company. Meanwhile, Matt Booty has taken on the role of executive vice president and chief content officer of the gaming division.
