Tulsi Gabbard announced on Friday (May 22) that she is stepping down as Director of National Intelligence at the end of June due to her husband’s diagnosis of cancer.
Gabbard wrote to President Donald Trump in a letter informing him that her husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer, which will present him with significant challenges in the weeks and months ahead. She also wrote that at this time, she is stepping back from public service to be by her husband’s side and fully support him in this fight.
Trump praised Gabbard on Truth Social and announced that Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Paul Lukas will serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence.
CNN reported, citing a source, that Gabbard met with President Trump in the Oval Office on Friday to deliver the letter.
In the letter, Gabbard describes her husband Abraham as her biggest supporter in their marriage, saying he has been a constant presence during special operations, political campaigns, and his tenure as director of national intelligence.
In the letter, she also said that her husband’s strength and love sustained her through every challenge.
