The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced a $200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Monica Witt, who was charged with espionage in 2019 for sharing highly classified US intelligence with Iran.
The FBI said in a statement on Thursday (May 14) that they are trying to find Witt, who formerly worked as a special agent and counterintelligence specialist for the US Air Force and who defected to Iran in 2013.
CBS News reported that in February 2019, government prosecutors alleged that Witt shared information about a classified Defense Department program with the Iranian government and worked with the country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Authorities also alleged that he helped Iranian intelligence agencies target his former colleagues in US government positions.
Witt joined the US Air Force in 1997 and left in 2008, according to the Justice Department. He also worked as a Defense Department contractor until 2010.
Prosecutors say Witt traveled to Iran in 2012 to attend a “Hollywoodism” conference promoting anti-American propaganda. He returned in 2013 and received housing and computer equipment from Iranian officials, later working for Iran and sharing classified information as well as gathering intelligence on former US intelligence colleagues.
