OpenAI and Meta Platforms have held separate talks with Reliance Industries, the company of India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, about a potential partnership to expand their artificial intelligence offerings in the country, technology news website The Information reported on March 22.
A deal is being discussed between Reliance Jio and OpenAI for the distribution of ChatGPT, according to The Information, which cited two sources familiar with the matter.
OpenAI has also discussed with employees that ChatGPT has reduced the price of subscriptions in India to a few dollars per month instead of $20, but it is unclear whether OpenAl has discussed the idea of a price reduction with Reliance, according to the report.
Multinational conglomerate company Reliance has discussed selling OpenAI’s models to customers through an application programming interface (API). The Mukesh Ambani-led company has also discussed hosting and operating OpenAI’s models locally so that local customer data can be kept within India, The Information report added.
Importantly, Reliance has discussed running Meta and OpenAI’s models in a three-gigawatt data center, which the company is planning to build in the city of Jamnagar, Gujarat, and which is claimed to be the world’s largest data center.
Technology company Meta declined to comment on the Information report, while OpenAI and Reliance did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report.
Ambani-owned Reliance Industries is one of India’s largest companies, with operations in petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail, and green energy.
