Amazon’s cloud services provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS), will invest about $8.2 billion in India’s Maharashtra over the next few years, the information technology ministry said on Monday (March 3), Reuters reported.
India is stepping up its efforts to secure local cloud data storage. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the country’s cloud services market—estimated at $8.3 billion in 2023—is expected to reach $24.2 billion by 2028.
India’s Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that the investments will be launched by 2029-2030, and along with the investment, there will be a significant increase in employment.
Vaishnaw also said Amazon will set up its own graphics processing unit, latest technology, and cloud management services in India.
Amazon operates two data centers in the Indian subcontinent: one AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region, launched in 2016, and another AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, launched in 2022.
Last year, Amazon said it would invest an additional $2 billion in the Indian economy to boost its e-commerce business, according to Reuters.
Amazon-owned Amazon Web Services (AWS), launched in 2006, is essentially a cloud computing platform that provides services for storage, computing, networking, and more.
