Consumers looking for a new smartphone may soon be paying more for the device as a major chip supplier, Qualcomm, is planning a double-digit price hike on its products. The move is likely to affect smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other connected devices around the world.
Reports indicate that Qualcomm has already informed customers that the new pricing will take effect for shipments after September 1. The company pointed out rising supplier and production costs, saying it can no longer absorb the increases internally. It also explored alternative sourcing options before making its decision on the price change.
In its letter to customers Friday, the company said it would implement the price increase on products shipped after Sept. 1, the report said. Qualcomm supplies processors to major companies such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, so the price hike could eventually reach consumers if manufacturers pass on the added costs. Its Snapdragon chips are used widely across smartphones and are expanding into laptops, automotive systems, and smart devices.
