Russia launched one of the largest ballistic missile strikes of the war on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv overnight, Reuters reported. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that at least one person was killed and 16 others were wounded in the attack.
The country’s air force said a series of powerful explosions rocked the darkened city in a strike of 41 missiles of various types. The missile attacks damaged buildings and sparked fires in several districts of the city.
The structures damaged in the attack included residential buildings, warehouses, a supermarket, and a dormitory, the capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko said, according to Reuters. He added that three people were in critical condition.
Separately, on Sunday, four people were killed and 19 injured in a Russian attack on a post office outside the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Reuters reported, citing the regional governor’s office.
Russia also attacked a rehabilitation center in the neighboring Sumy region, and a guided bomb attack in the regional capital killed one person, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Kyiv’s military claimed it had shot down 18 missiles in Sunday’s attack and downed 108 of the 125 drones.
Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked the United States and its European allies for air defense assistance to secure Ukraine’s airspace over the past few years. In May, he wrote a letter to US President Donald Trump requesting military assistance.
Last week, President Zelenskyy said that the United States and Ukraine had reached a political agreement on the licensing of interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system. He added that he hopes that production of the interceptor missiles can begin by the end of 2026.
