Brian Chesky, CEO of American company Airbnb, is launching a new artificial intelligence lab, Fortune reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter. It is Chesky’s first step into the global artificial intelligence race.

The company’s chief is planning to establish an AI initiative to build artificial intelligence models and is considering focusing on user interaction and design, a source familiar with the matter said, speaking on condition of anonymity. He is reportedly in the early stages of fundraising for the lab.

According to Fortune, Chesky will remain CEO of the San Francisco-based company but will not serve as chief executive of the new lab.

Chesky believes that AI applications for travel and e-commerce need a richer user interface than the current text-based chatbots. Airbnb’s main rivals in the online travel and accommodation booking market, Expedia Group and Booking Holdings, have partnered with OpenAI. On the other hand, Chesky says that OpenAI’s current app-integration tools are not yet mature or capable enough for his company’s needs.

Chesky is in the process of transforming his company into a “do-it-all” travel app, including new additional services. He hopes that his company will eventually reach $1 billion or more in annual revenue. CEO Chesky said last month that the company’s employees have adopted AI coding tools to accelerate this expansion, with the new business pilot spun up to launch in weeks instead of years, according to Fortune.

Chesky is the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb, and his company generated $12.2 billion in revenue in 2025. However, the revenue was 10% higher than in 2024.
